Back in 1961, the Ford Consul Classic 315 cruised onto British roads with its distinctive reverse-slope rear window and American-inspired fins. A bold look for a sensible saloon.

You could pick up a Morphy Richards hair dryer for £3 10s 8d (around £80 today), or splash out on Boots cologne bath soap for just 9d, it was the Consul Classic that turned heads.

A pint of beer? 2 shillings and a halfpenny. The government had announced the new “panda” crossings with push-button controls. They were the future of pedestrian power!

That same year, Private Eye magazine published its first edition.

This illustration features the graceful lines of the Consul Clacssic 315 in fine detail — a tribute to one of Ford’s more daring designs of the early '60s.
